tacoma yoga classThe more years I have co-owned a yoga studio, the more I have seen the growth of yoga in our culture. Today, you can find yourself seeing various images of yoga from TV, magazines, cartoons, YouTube, online, apps, on the sides of buses in cities, and beyond that, chances are you can name a place that may seem random and most likely there has been a reference to yoga with an image of someone doing a yoga pose.

This is great for many reasons. It makes me believe that more people are interested in the greater good of all people by taking the time to observe their own lives and make better choices based on what they are learning through their yoga practice.

There’s one thing for sure that I know: yoga has been around for thousands of years and it clearly works, or it wouldn’t still be a presence with millions of people today adapting this practice to their lives. For many of us, that practice is done on a weekly basis at a gym, or a studio and the focus is primarily on the physical practice (the asana).

Yet the asana is only one limb of an eight limb system that provides wholeness and well-being for both the body and mind to those who practice these teachings. This month we are delighted to bring to you a five week series of the Yamas & the Niyamas with Source teacher, Dawn Bowden. The Yamas & the Niyamas, simply put, are ethical guidelines in relating to self and others. Or as author Donna Farhi reflects from her book, Yoga, Mind, Body, and Spirit,

“The yamas and niyamas are emphatic descriptions of what we are when we are connected to our Source. Rather than a list of dos and don’ts, they tell us that our fundamental nature is compassionate, generous, honest, and peaceful.”

If you are interested in diving into how a yoga practice can translate into your daily life, then this is the series for you. I encourage you to register and open yourself to the whole of yoga. Click here to register.
