The City of Gig Harbor will soon be installing five new pet waste bag dispensers along the Cushman Trail. Mud Bay pet supply store, located in Point Fosdick Square at 4816 Point Fosdick Drive NW in Gig Harbor, generously donated the stations along with a year’s supply of Mutt Mitts. The stations will be located at the 96th Street, Rosedale Street and Grandview Street junctions, at the intersection of Hollycroft and Olympic Drive, and Kimball Drive near the Wilco Farm Store.

“We are delighted to partner with the City of Gig Harbor to help keep our public spaces free of pet waste,” says Karlee Kelmel, Gig Harbor’s Mud Bay Manager. “Dog owners seem to especially appreciate the newly-installed bag dispensers along the Cushman Trail and we’re happy to give back to our community and help protect our waterways.”

The Mud Bay and city staff encourage dog walkers to utilize the bags to dispose of animal waste. Using them provides numerous benefits to the environment because pet waste increases the amount of nutrients in the water which throws the ecosystem out of balance resulting in excessive algae growth and fish die-offs. Picking up pet waste also reduces pathogens from reaching watersheds. In addition, the bags are puncture resistant and a solid construction and can be used as a portable water dish for animals.

City of Gig Harbor Operations crew will be installing the stations during the month of October. More information about City of Gig Harbor parks, including the Cushman Trail, can be found at www.cityofgigharbor.net/parks or by calling the city at 253-851-6170.
