When Information Technology Specialist student Katie Glaser begins her second quarter next month, she’ll help set up the student network and servers in the Advanced Technology Center at Bates Technical College’s Central/Mohler Campus.

The college will celebrate the building’s official opening with a ceremony and art dedication on Thursday, January 7, 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. p.m. at 2320 S. 19th Street in Tacoma. Glaser, along with approximately 200 students, will start winter quarter in a spacious two-story building designed to give students the best educational experience in a facility that strengthens the college’s ability to integrate experiential learning within curriculum.

The $23 million project broke ground in March 2014 and will house the college’s information technology, engineering, and digital media programs.

“This building provides an outstanding new home for our faculty, staff and students in these programs,” said President, Ron Langrell. “The facility will help reinforce our connections with industry and community members, and will position our college at the forefront of innovation and collaborative learning in our region,” he said.

The building expands the learning footprint at the campus by nearly 52,000 square feet, and includes an auditorium, meeting spaces, administrative support and educational spaces, a STEM classroom, a learning resource center, and student support services. The award-winning facility achieves the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold rating, and offers a high-level performance with low environmental impact.
