Last week Tacoma Opera announced the cancellation of their 2020 – 2021 season in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the uncertainty of future state guidelines and because of the safety and wellbeing of their patrons and performers, the professional opera company plans to resume live performances during their 2021 – 2022 season. Tacoma Opera hopes to continue to bring opera to the South Sound community in different ways during their suspended season, but asks patrons and fans to help support the non-profit organization through these unprecedented times by making tax-deductible donations at

A letter from Tacoma Opera’s General Director, Noel Koran, states:

At Tacoma Opera, we have been maintaining an optimistic outlook and hoping that we would be able to offer some kind of live performances this season for our patrons, but as the Coronavirus continues to run rampant in our society and refuses to abate, it becomes more and more difficult to realistically plan and schedule any kind of live performance, even a one person recital with piano.

Consequently, after much debate and deliberation, the Tacoma Opera Board of Directors voted this week to not present any live performances this season, essentially suspending our 2020-21 season. For me as the General Director of the company, this is a bitter pill to swallow, but I agree completely with the Board’s decision and believe it is in the best interest of everyone. The safety of our patrons and our performers is paramount in our minds and it would be tragic if even one person, either patron or performer, were to be infected with the virus at one of our performances.

We will soon be announcing plans about reaching out to our patrons and the public via social media, e-blasts and virtual online presentations until we can once again be presenting live Opera in Tacoma’s City theaters. In the meantime, we still humbly ask for your support so we can get through this challenging and difficult period. So please donate now so we can give the Gift of Opera back to you in the future.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and for your support. We look forward to being back live in the theaters for our 2021 -2022 season.
