Starting fall quarter, Pierce College is proud to offer a brand new course designed to introduce students to social media best practices for business. Introduction to Social Media Marketing (Business 134) will be taught completely online, and will give students hands on experience using social media, creating blogs and exploring other emerging technologies.

Students can expect to spend at least 10 hours per week on the class, and will walk away from the course with practical experience and an online portfolio showcasing their abilities.

“One of the goals of this class is to give students artifacts that they can show potential employers to land them the job of their dreams,” said Professor Taryn Givenchy. “Students will also learn about how social media can change the world from a business perspective.”

In addition to learning how businesses use social media, the course also explores how to use these technologies to monitor conversations on the Internet, engage online communities, identify influencers and establish thought leadership.

Givenchy is teaching the course, drawing on her own experience as a communications director for 14 years at a large nonprofit organization in Seattle. She has also worked as a coach for small business owners looking to find ways to market themselves online.

“This course shows how cutting-edge we are here in the business department at Pierce College,” said Business Department Coordinator and Professor Paul Gerhardt. “We’re constantly upgrading our department’s curriculum so we can meet the needs that employers demand. The course is taught by a professor with both education and experience in social media.”
