Pierce County residents have successfully walked around the world. The Walk Around the World campaign, organized by Downtown On the Go, encouraged the community to walk for transportation and fitness and log their walking trips on PierceTrips.com to be part of the 24,859-mile walking challenge.

This year’s Walk Around the World campaign crushed the six-month completion goal, completing the goal in less than four months. The campaign this year also saw a 60-percent increase from 2014 in walk miles logged. More than 300 people participated in the campaign, collectively logging an average of 6,284 miles a month.

Participants who logged their walking trips on the Piercetrips.com Trip Calendar were rewarded with various prizes.  Participants received T-shirts if they logged at least one walk trip on Piercetrips.com and participated in one Walk Tacoma series event. If participants walked more than 40 miles before July, they were eligible to receive two tickets from the Tacoma Rainiers, the campaigns’ sponsor.

Meagan Kula, Coordinator at Downtown On the Go: “We are so pleased with the results of the Walk Around the World campaign.  It gave people one more reason to get outside and walk, which has both individual and community benefits, and it connected them with a tracking mechanism to help report community progress and encourage future alternative trips.”

The campaign ran in conjunction with Downtown on the Go’s summer 2015 Walk Tacoma series, a nine-event walking series that held walks on the first and third Wednesdays, from April through August. The themed walks encouraged people to enjoy downtown on foot by introducing new walking routes and sharing information about the community and its history through guided tours.
