Heading to the mountains this season? If so, then it’s time to start asking questions like, “What traction devices do I need?” and “What preparations should I make for winter driving conditions?” It’s important to ask yourself these questions now, before the rush for winter traction products hits and you have trouble finding what you need.

What is the definition of a traction tire?

The first question you may have is, “What does it mean when it says ‘traction tires advised’?” An approved traction tire, whether on a four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicle or a standard vehicle, must have at least an eighth of an inch (4/32?) of tread and be labeled M&S, All Season, or have a Mountain/Snowflake symbol.

A tire with this little tread depth is far from an effective traction tire in  professionals circles.  A tire at this level is severely worn and should be removed from service.

When you install approved chains, any tire becomes a traction tire. For more information on  your specific vehicle and its traction tire options, contact a tire professional at Courtesy Auto Service and Tire.

When do I need chains?

When you see this sign on the pass or hear this warning, “tire chains required,” what it means — except four/all-wheel drive. In extreme weather conditions, the advisory may indicate chains are required on all-wheel drive vehicles.

If you are driving an all-wheel drive or 4WD vehicle you still need to carry chains with you. If you DO NOT have chains and DOT/WSP is checking they will not let you pass until the conditions improve. Safety is the utmost importance. Take time to be prepared.
