Small business owners work hard each day to make their customers happy and provide products and services that keep their clientele coming back. This hard work is most often measured by sales, customer reviews, and the business owner’s own satisfaction of watching their company grow. However, every so often, a small business’ accomplishments are recognized in a big way.

Recently, Scott Welsh, owner of Courtesy Auto Service and Tire of Tacoma, and his wife, Susan, received news that their business had been selected as the recipient of a very prestigious award in the automotive world — “Tire Review’s” Top Shop North America Award.

The nationally recognized award honors the “best of the best” of independent tire dealers in North America — and getting named one of the winners isn’t easy.

With more than 1,000 entries, Welsh said it was an honor being ranked among the nation’s best tire dealers.

“One day I get an email from Jim at “Tire Review” telling me I’ve been selected as a semi-finalist,” Welsh shared.

Courtesy Auto Service and Tire of Tacoma was one of 20 semi-finalists to be considered for the award. “I thought they would pick the Top Shop based on who does the most business, but it doesn’t matter if you’re a behemoth,” Welsh explained. “It’s about how you do business. So I provided all that information, and from twenty finalists, it went down to eight.”

As the number of semi-finalists continued to shrink, Welsh eagerly waited to see if Courtesy Auto Service and Tire of Tacoma made the cut — it did.

Atlantic Tire on the East Coast claimed first place while Courtesy Auto Service and Tire of Tacoma was named one of three finalists. For Welsh, this was where the real win was.

The two other businesses that earned the ranks as Top Shop finalists were Mountain View Tire in Southern California, which has more than 20 locations across the Golden State, and Indy Tire, a commercial wholesaler, both of which do about 10 times more business than Courtesy Auto Service and Tire of Tacoma.

To be named a Top Shop finalist among the ranks of nationally recognized businesses like Mountain View Tire and Indy Tire cements the fact that Welsh is running his business right.

“The award validates to everyone who works here — including me and my wife — that hard, dedication and operating a really consumer-driven business pays off,” Welsh explained. “The pride, energy and effort that myself and everyone down the line puts into this place, it’s recognized.”

And that recognition came in the form of a glossy six-page spread in “Tire Review,” a prestigious award, and a state-of-the-art wheel balancing machine valued at more than $9,000.

However, while this impressive recognition serves as a positive reminder of the great work Welsh and his team provide at Courtesy Auto Service and Tire of Tacoma, Welsh said nothing compares to the testimonials of his customers.

Longtime customer Elyssa Tappero said, “I love coming to Courtesy Auto. The staff is always very friendly and attentive — never pushy — and extremely knowledgeable. I never feel like I’m being taken advantage of or tricked into getting unnecessary work done; they even provide photos of the relevant areas of your vehicles so you can see firsthand what they’re talking about. Plus, their prices are always low and competitive with other shops — love them.”
