The Tacoma Rainiers in-house marketing team, headed by Creative Director Tony Canepa, earned six awards at the regional American Advertising Awards event in Seattle last Thursday night, highlighted by a pair of Judge’s Choice selections.

The recognized piece was the club’s 2017 season ticket renewal piece which was conceptualized, designed, and executed by Canepa, Casey Catherwood, and Taryn Duncan.

“Creating something special for our fans is always our primary goal, and we love to see their response when they receive these books,” Canepa said. “It is a great honor when that enthusiasm is echoed by the best in the advertising business as it was last week.”

The Rainiers were the only group to earn multiple of the prestigious Judge’s Choice awards – given to the judges favorite submitted piece across all submitted work – three Gold awards, and one Silver award. These honors follow the success of the team’s 2015 season ticket renewal piece, which received national acclaim and collected a total of 14 awards across regional, district, and national competitions two years ago.

“Our winning piece tells the story of baseball in Tacoma in the form an illustrated children’s book,” Canepa said. “The goal was to make the book feel timeless, so you would be unsure if it was brand new or from the very first Opening Day in Tacoma in 1960.”

The multitude of honors earned by the Rainiers were the most awarded to a professional sports franchise.

“You see Tony’s work in everything we do, and in everything fans experience at Cheney Stadium,” Team President Aaron Artman said. “It isn’t just limited to great design; his work has soul, and I think that captures the imagination of our fans and our city. It’s not surprising that it also captured the imagination of the judges.”

The awards come as the Rainiers prepare Cheney Stadium for the 2017 home opener on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:05 p.m. PT. The highlight of the upcoming season will be the 2017 Triple-A All-Star Game, set for Wednesday, July 12. Tickets for both events are on sale now at www.tacomarainiers.com.
