When Dwayne Boggs, of Boggs Inspection Services, approached Heather Derrick with a job offer, she knew it would be an amazing opportunity to switch careers. Heather had worked in the banking industry for 10 years, and the most enjoyable part had been her interaction with customers. “I’ve always loved working with people.” says Heather. The new opportunity Dwayne offered Heather was as the company’s marketing representative.

“Dwayne always seemed like a great guy to work for,” says Heather. She had known Dwayne for years so when he brought up the idea of creating a new position in the company, just for her to market the business, she jumped right in. Heather loves the way that marketing allows her to be creative in forming relationships and connecting with people.

Heather finds new ways to engage with potential and current clients. For her, it is important to get the word out about the company’s great services while maintaining strong relationships with existing clients.

“Dwayne trusts me to use my creativity,” Heather explains “I get to put my right side of my brain to work along with the left side” Though she was able to work with customers in her previous job, the days were too repetitive for her. Now, her days are much more exciting since she gets to engage all parts of her brain, and she never knows what to expect.

Heather’s job is multifaceted. One key component of her job is building relationships with customers throughout the region. Heather also builds relationships with local realtors and real estate agencies in the four counties that Boggs Inspection Services serves. Often, homebuyers come into the buying process with no experience about who they should contact for inspection services. So, when their real estate agent is able to recommend someone with whom they have built a longstanding and trustworthy relationship, the homeowners are relieved that they don’t have to entrust their future home to the first stranger that pops up on an internet search.

Using her creativity to connect with home owners, realtors and others in the industry, Heather educates them on what Boggs Inspections Services can offer them. She does that by attending various events, setting up tables at home shows and realtor conventions across south Puget Sound. There she gives out information, answers questions, and networks with others in the business and serves as a friendly face for the Boggs team. Heather stresses that it’s important to her and to the company to build lasting relationships and to be a part of the community. “We are in it for the long haul,” she says, “and we want our customers to know that.”

Customers and professional connections are important to Dwayne Boggs, but so are his employees and their families. Heather’s job in marketing offers her the ability to work part-time remotely from home. She spends much of her day at home making phone calls, writing emails and engaging on social media with customers and prospective clients. The flexibility in her job is very important to Heather because it allows her the ability to devote time to her two young children.

“Dwayne really cares about his employees,” she says. Heather’s previous employment was not as flexible and family friendly, so she recognizes that benefit. The Boggs team also gets together after hours, like at a recent pizza party that brought the team and their families together. “Dwayne is great at doing things for the employees and our families,” she says. “He is very family oriented.”

Since Heather joined the Boggs team, and she has been able to get their message out to more customers that wish to use their inspection services. “Coming on to the Boggs inspection team has been a really good decision,” continues Heather, “not just for me personally, but also for the company.” She is constantly trying to find new ways to help the company expand. Boggs Inspection Services currently serves Thurston, Pierce, Mason and Lewis counties. Heather’s growth goals are ambitious, but as a native to Thurston County she wants that growth to be strong and sustainable, helping and connecting with the community. “We don’t say ‘How do we grow the business this month?’” Heather explains. “Instead we say, ‘How can we grow this business year after year and be there for our community?’”

Heather loves to spend time with her husband and two children when she is not working as the marketing master for Boggs Inspection Services. In her free time, she likes to play the piano, bake goodies and enjoy the splendor of the gorgeous Pacific Northwest she calls home.
