The Fairy Store’s Third Annual Blood Drive

This summer, The Fairy Store in Lakewood is all set to host their Annual Blood Drive for the third year in a row.

Shirley Ritter, better known as The Fairy Godmother, owns and operates The Fairy Store, dedicating her time to bringing joy to others through a world of fairy magic. Eight years ago, just before purchasing her shop, Shirley retired from a longtime nursing career. Shirley took it upon herself to host an annual blood drive at The Fairy Store along with Cascade Regional Blood Services to give back to those in need.

“This is our third annual blood drive. I had an uncle who inspired me to become a donor. He had donated 10 gallons of whole blood,” Shirley tells us. “I am a retired registered nurse and know the importance of donating blood to save lives. I have personally donated 23.3 gallons of whole blood and my ultimate goal is to reach 25 gallons.”

Stop by The Fairy Store on Friday, August 17, 2019, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to hop on Cascade Regional Blood Service’s own Bloodmobile to help save a life.

In our local South Sound communities, the blood supply available to those in need is 100% provided by volunteer blood donors. “Thousands of lives in Pierce and King Counties have been saved because of Cascade Regional Blood Services’ blood products,” Multicare Health Systems’ states. “Without their partnership and the dedication of blood donors, our ability to help these patients would be very challenging. We are grateful that Cascade Regional Blood Services provides all the blood products for our patients in our Puget Sound area hospitals.”

Every two seconds, someone in the United States is in need of blood. Cascade Regional Blood Services’ says, “We are currently experiencing a high use of blood, particularly O Neg, by our area hospitals and lower than normal collections. Please help us maintain an adequate supply of lifesaving blood products for patients in our area hospitals.”

Haven’t donated blood before? No problem! According to Cascade Regional Blood Services, 15% of non-donors say they are too busy and 17% of non-donors say they haven’t given blood because they simply haven’t thought about it. Donating blood will only take one hour out of your day, from the time you register to the time you get your homemade cookie and fairy dust from The Fairy Godmother.

In order to sign up, blood donors can utilize Cascade Regional Blood Service’s easy online registration or can stop by The Fairy Store in person to reserve a time slot for your donation. By signing up early, donors are sure to have an easier and quicker experience.

“We hope to have the biggest turnout yet,” Shirley tells us. “I will always encourage, educate and advocate for all who are able to be a donor”.
