As someone who has recently relocated to the South Sound area, I’ve found that one of my favorite ways to get acquainted with the region is to simply get outside and explore. And let me tell you—Point Ruston has quickly become one of my go-to spots.
Nestled right along Commencement Bay, this waterfront destination is the perfect combination of natural beauty, family-friendly fun, and food worth writing home about. Whether you’re in the mood for a scenic walk, a sweet treat, or some local shopping, there’s always something new and exciting to discover. If you haven’t made your way down to the Point Ruston Waterfront yet, consider this your sign.
Waterwalk & Grand Plaza
Start your day with a stroll on the Waterwalk & Grand Plaza, a nearly mile-long, paved path that stretches from Dune Peninsula to Point Ruston’s Grand Plaza. This path is ideal for walking, jogging, rollerblading, or even just people-watching. The views of Mt. Rainier are breathtaking on a clear day, practically demanding you stop for a quick selfie (or ten). You’ll pass cheerful pups, friendly joggers, and families soaking in the sunshine. Along the way, the waterfront breeze and salty air create that perfect mix of serenity and refreshment.
When you reach the Grand Plaza, the energy shifts. This is the heart of Point Ruston, with its sprayground for kids, a charming boat-themed playground, and plenty of seating for those who just want to relax and take in the buzz. It’s not uncommon to stumble across a live music performance here, or see families enjoying ice cream while kids dash through the water jets. This area is pure joy, especially in the summer.

Dune Peninsula & “Chutes and Ladders” Slides
For a more tranquil experience, head north to Dune Peninsula. This sculptural, grassy expanse is a great place to spread out a picnic blanket or catch a sunset over the bay. It’s a beautifully repurposed space, transformed from an old industrial site into a vibrant public park. You can follow the Frank Herbert Trail, named after the Tacoma-born author of “Dune,” which features artful nods to his iconic sci-fi legacy.
Want to make your way to Point Defiance Park? You’ve got two options: cross the Wilson Way Bridge for sweeping views, or take the fun route, down the “Chutes and Ladders” slides. Yes, you read that right. Giant metal slides that twist and turn down the hillside. Whether you’re 5 or 50, it’s a thrill ride you’ll want to take more than once.
Ice Cream Social & Sweet Shops
After all that activity, it’s time for a sugar fix. Ice Cream Social is a local favorite, offering small-batch, handcrafted ice cream with both classic and quirky flavors. Their Almond Poppyseed and Valhalla Coffee options are especially drool-worthy. If you’re craving more than just ice cream, pop into Dolce Si, a cozy Sicilian bakery and espresso bar where the cannoli and cappuccinos are equally irresistible.

WildFin American Grill & Stack 571
Hungry for something heartier? WildFin American Grill delivers a polished dining experience with fresh, regional seafood and a stunning view of the bay from the outdoor patio. It’s a lovely spot for a romantic dinner or just a relaxing lunch with a view.
If you’re in the mood for something more casual but equally delicious, Stack 571 Burger & Whiskey Bar hits the mark. Think juicy burgers, decadent fries, and an impressive whiskey selection—all served in a hip, comfortable space that’s perfect for a laid-back night out.
Farrelli’s Pizza
For a crowd-pleasing classic, Farrelli’s Pizza brings that quintessential Northwest flavor to its wood-fired pies. With a warm, welcoming vibe, it’s great for families or large groups looking to unwind after a day of waterfront fun.
Wheel Fun Rentals
Don’t miss Wheel Fun Rentals, where you can rent everything from tandem bikes to four-wheeled surreys or quirky little chopper bikes. It’s an especially fun way to explore the waterfront if you’ve got kids in tow or are looking for a playful date activity.
Point Ruston Theater
Looking to wind down in the evening? Point Ruston Theater offers the ultimate movie-going experience, complete with plush recliners that make it feel like you’re watching a film from your living room—only better. It’s a perfect place to catch the latest blockbuster or indie hit. And if you’re budget-conscious, take advantage of Tuesday deals for some serious savings.

Point Ruston Waterfront Market
On weekends, the Waterfront Market adds a layer of charm and community to the area. Local vendors set up stalls offering everything from farm-fresh produce and handmade jewelry to artisan candles and hot sauces. With live music often playing in the background, it’s a lovely place to meander, sip a coffee, and support local makers.
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium
Just a short walk or slide across the bridge lands you at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. This unique facility is the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest, making it a must-see for families and animal lovers alike. From majestic tigers to playful sea otters, the exhibits are both educational and heart-melting.
Whether you’re new to the area like me or just looking to rediscover a local gem, Point Ruston offers something for everyone. It’s one of those rare places where natural beauty, community vibes, and good eats all come together. With so much to see and do, it’s no wonder the waterfront is becoming one of the South Sound’s most beloved destinations.
