Walking into Black Bird Apothecary in Pierce County is like entering a sanctuary where community, healing, and curiosity intertwine. The Tacoma shop hums with warmth and intention, inviting visitors to pause, breathe, and explore. Owner Katie Scott describes the mission clearly: “to create a safe and inclusive space for folks to ask questions, learn, grow as individuals and build community through caring for their mind, body and spirit.” Black Bird Apothecary offers everything from crystals and herbal remedies to psychic readings and community gatherings.

Crystals, Tarot Readings, Herbs and Events Inspire Connection in Tacoma
Black Bird Apothecary offers a wide array of products designed to nurture wellness and community connection. Scott explains, “We offer crystals, tarot and oracle decks, loose herbs, body care, jewelry, curated vintage, and specialty items from over 25 local vendors.”
The apothecary also partners with Tacoma Psychic Molly, from MollyIsAPsychic.com, to provide in-house services. “Molly offers Psychic Tarot Readings, Mediumship, Pet Readings, Astrology, Birth Chart Readings, Energy Release Sessions and Mentor Opportunities,” Scott notes.
Community events are a vital part of the apothecary’s mission. “Throughout the year, we also host events like Channel Group, Moon Makers Craft Circle, Community Energy Healing, and Molly’s Tarot 101 course to offer opportunities for growth and community building,” Scott says. These gatherings transform the shop into a hub where Pierce County residents can explore new practices while forming lasting bonds.

An Inclusive Approach to Spirituality in Pierce County
What makes Black Bird distinct is not just the products and services, but the way they are offered. “Our approach to spirituality is first honoring the individual and their experience,” Scott says. Together, she and Molly focus on accessibility. “We function from a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, neurodivergent friendly lens that seeks to support folks in attuning to their needs and intuition while honoring their discernment in deciding what is aligned for them.”
That perspective stems from a deep well of experience. “With collectively over 30 years’ experience working in trauma, abuse and substance use advocacy, Molly and I value the importance of having a safe and supportive community approach to individual healing and growth,” Scott emphasizes. She explains that their lived and professional experiences allow them “to create offerings that uplift, clarify and support our clients’ efforts to find their true, authentic self.”

Scottish Roots, Cultural Responsibility, and Ancestral Connection in Pierce County
For Scott, her Scottish heritage plays a central role in shaping the apothecary’s philosophy. “Being Scottish, and raised with an understanding of specific cultural rituals, customs, lore and practices, has allowed me to speak with folks who feel they are disconnected from their ancestral roots, or feel unsure how to start a connection to their lineage,” she shares.
Scott uses her own example to illustrate cultural responsibility. “An example would be using juniper, a traditional Scottish herb used for saining (smoke cleansing) instead of White Sage for smoke cleansing, which is a closed practice, when I want to cleanse, clear and protect my home and self,” Scott explains. “We do not sell sage in our shop; however, we do have many other alternative options that are both effective and culturally responsible.”
By choosing practices rooted in her own heritage, Scott demonstrates how to honor lineage while respecting cultures that are not one’s own.

A Welcoming Space for Authentic Community in Pierce County
Scott’s work often begins with a simple yet powerful question: “Mostly by asking them ‘what feels right to you?’” She has found that this creates an important opening. “I have found that being willing to listen and just offer a little bit of insight when needed offers folks an invitation to trust their own experience, which is what magic is all about.”
Community feedback reflects the welcoming spirit that has been cultivated at the shop. “The most common things we hear from folks when they walk in,” Scott recalls. “They step over the threshold, and ‘wow, it smells so good in here.’ Or ‘OMG, the energy in here feels so nice. What a beautiful shop!’”
Visitors often thank Scott and Molly for their impact. “They share how our shop, items, and services have positively impacted their lives, their appreciation for how hard we rep our community and then they come back with their friends, family and loved ones, which is the highest compliment,” Scott says. “We are very lucky to get to do what we do here at Black Bird Apothecary.”
Black Bird Apothecary continues to look toward the future with excitement. Scott encourages locals to stay engaged: “Follow Black Bird Apothecary on Instagram, @BlackBirdApothecary_ @MollyIsAPsychic, or stop by the shop Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and from Sunday through Tuesday by appointment only, get a reading with Molly and be one of the first to find out when we announce our next adventure!”
