If you’ve spent the past couple of months hibernating under a mountain of blankets and waiting for a groundhog to see its shadow, then consider this your wake-up call. Punxsutawney Phil only gets it right about 39% of the time, so the only thing that needs to come out of hiding is you! While the rest of the world may be content to abide the furry forecaster, we prefer to trust something far more reliable: the first daffodils of April, the scent of fair food drifting through Puyallup, and the sound of dragon boat drums echoing across the harbor. So go ahead, leave Phil to his burrow and come discover why South Sound’s spring events have been blooming for generations.

Daffodil Festival

You know spring has officially sprung in South Sound when the golden trumpets of the Daffodil Festival are in full bloom! Since 1934, this storied tradition has served as the ultimate tribute to the rich agricultural roots of the Puyallup and Sumner valleys. What began as a simple garden party has blossomed into a multi-city extravaganza with the Grand Floral Parade weaving its way through Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting each April.

Today, the festival includes everything from a televised parade to a vibrant marine procession hosted by the Tacoma Yacht Club, plus appearances from the beloved Daffodil Festival Queen and her royal court. Considered Pierce County’s premier annual event—second only to the Washington State Fair—this springtime tradition continues to honor the region’s heritage while filling the streets with sunshine, petals, and pride.

Washington State Spring Fair

Say goodbye to the chill and hello to fun in the sun as the Washington State Spring Fair welcomes the season. Held over two action-packed weekends in mid-April, this Puyallup celebration brings all the energy of a classic fair with a distinctly springtime twist. Visitors can expect everything from high-flying carnival rides and adorable farm animals to live entertainment and motorsports mayhem, not to mention the kind of fair food that makes you forget every New Year’s resolution you ever made!

From monster trucks and rodeos to DockDogs splashing their way into the spotlight, the Spring Fair packs every corner of the grounds with something to see, taste, or cheer for. Add in garden showcases, agricultural exhibits, and enough kid-friendly activities to keep even the busiest families entertained, and you’ve got a spring tradition that truly earns its statewide reputation. It’s the perfect way to welcome warmer days the Washington way—loud, lively, and full of unforgettable fun.

South Sound Day of Remembrance

Spring in the South Sound isn’t only about celebration—it’s also a time for reflection. Each year in May, the South Sound Day of Remembrance honors the anniversary of the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the region in 1942. Now a deeply meaningful annual tradition curated by writer and public historian Tamiko Nimura, the event brings the community together to remember, learn, and honor the stories of those affected.

The evening typically includes a book fair, author conversations, and a panel discussion exploring Japanese American history and resilience. A solemn procession from the Washington State History Museum to Union Station serves as a powerful reminder of the past and a call to preserve these stories for future generations. Thoughtful, grounding, and profoundly human, the Day of Remembrance ensures that spring in the South Sound also carries space for memory and truth.

Gig Harbor Beer & Cider Festival

If your ideal spring day involves sunshine, good friends, and a cold drink in hand, the Gig Harbor Beer & Cider Festival is your seasonal happy place. Held each May at the height of the region’s warm-weather awakening, this lively event brings together dozens of local breweries, cideries, seltzer makers, and even a winery or two. Attendees receive tasting tickets to sample their way through the best of the South Sound’s craft beverage scene while enjoying live music, food vendors, and the easygoing atmosphere that Gig Harbor does best.

Beyond the brews, the festival supports the Kiwanis Club of Gig Harbor’s community service projects, meaning every sip goes toward a good cause. Whether you’re a craft connoisseur or simply curious, this festival offers a refreshing way to toast the season.

Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup

For those who prefer their spring celebrations on the water, the Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup is the South Sound’s premier showcase of paddle-powered excitement. Hosted annually at Skansie Brothers Park and Ancich Park, this weekend-long event brings together kayakers, canoeists, stand-up paddleboarders, outrigger teams, para-canoe athletes, and dragon boat crews from across the Pacific Northwest. Organized by the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team, the event welcomes paddlers of all ages and skill levels, offering races throughout the Inner Harbor that highlight both athleticism and community spirit.

Vendors line the shoreline, spectators cheer from the docks, and the harbor becomes a vibrant stage for competition and camaraderie. Proceeds support local nonprofit organizations dedicated to youth development, sportsmanship, and inclusive recreation—making the Paddlers Cup a celebration of both the water and the people who call it home.

Spring in the South Sound doesn’t need a groundhog’s blessing. It proves itself in petals, parades, and the unmistakable buzz of communities coming back to life. Whether you’re soaking up sunshine, stories, or simple moments shared with neighbors, this season offers countless ways to step out of hibernation and into something memorable. All that’s left is for you to join in!
