The aroma of venison tacos and roasted street corn filled the Camp Lewis USO Center as service members, veterans and military families gathered for an afternoon centered on good food, conversation and community appreciation.
Comcast joined Sportsman Channel and USO Northwest to bring the Hunt.Fish.Feed. Heroes Lunch to Joint Base Lewis-McChord this month for the first time. Hundreds of guests attended the event, which offered more than a complimentary meal. It created an opportunity for military families to spend time together and feel the support of organizations and volunteers from across the community.
Volunteers Serve a Special Meal at JBLM
Comcast employees worked alongside the Hunt.Fish.Feed. culinary team to prepare and serve a menu created by Chef Paul Comes. Guests enjoyed venison tacos, street corn salad, Southwest coleslaw and fresh fruit salad.
Between preparing plates and welcoming families, volunteers helped transform the USO Center into a warm gathering place where guests could relax, connect and share a meal.
Hunt.Fish.Feed. is a national Sportsman Channel initiative that uses wild game and fish to create nutritious meals for people and communities in need. For nearly two decades, the program has served tens of thousands of meals across the country while bringing together outdoor traditions and community service.
Its first visit to JBLM provided a fitting way to honor the service members stationed at the base, as well as the spouses, children and loved ones who support them.
“As a U.S. Marine Veteran, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our employee volunteers for stepping up to support military families at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Events like the Hunt.Fish.Feed. Heroes Lunch are a meaningful reminder that service comes in many forms, whether in uniform or through giving your time to serve others,” said Roy Novosel, Vice President, Engineering & Technical Operations, Comcast Pacific Northwest. I also want to thank the USO Northwest and Sportsman Channel for their outstanding partnership and shared commitment to honoring those who serve. Together, we created an event that brought people together, strengthened community connections, and showed our appreciation for the sacrifices made by military families every day.”
Creating Moments of Connection for Military Families
The Heroes Lunch was one of two recent community events designed to recognize JBLM families.
More than 700 service members, veterans and family members also gathered at Carey Theater for the Comcast Military Families Free “Minions & Monsters” Watch Party. Presented in partnership with the Armed Services YMCA and Lollipop Theater Network, the event gave families an opportunity to enjoy movies, snacks, giveaways and photo opportunities together.
Comcast employees volunteered throughout the screenings, welcoming guests, assisting with registration, distributing snacks, helping families find their seats and preparing the theater between showings.
The employees participated through Team UP, Comcast’s volunteer program supporting nonprofits, schools, military organizations and community events.
Together, the lunch and movie screenings demonstrated how community organizations and local volunteers can support military households through simple but meaningful experiences — whether that means sharing a meal, enjoying a family movie or spending time with neighbors who understand the demands of military life.
Resources Help Military Households Stay Connected
Comcast also offers resources intended to help eligible military families access communications and entertainment services.
Through the Xfinity Military Program, qualified new and existing customers may receive benefits including an Unlimited Xfinity Mobile line for 24 months when adding a line with Xfinity Internet, one year of NOW TV and automatic Xfinity Diamond Rewards status. Eligible customers can also receive a discounted Peacock subscription.
The company’s Internet Essentials program offers qualifying households, including veterans and military families, home internet service starting at $14.95 per month. Comcast NBCUniversal also works with military-serving organizations through Project UP to provide digital skills training, entrepreneurship opportunities and access to technology.
For the organizations and volunteers involved, however, the Heroes Lunch was ultimately about something more personal: showing gratitude to the people who serve and to the families who serve alongside them.
By sharing food, time, and conversation, the JBLM community and its local partners demonstrated that saying “thank you” can be as simple and meaningful as pulling up a chair together.
