Bringing a new furry friend into your home is a big step, and there are many factors to consider. Luckily, Pierce County has three wonderful organizations that will help you find the perfect fit for you and your family. With the use of their online profiles and experienced staff who are eager to help find forever homes for their animals, there is no doubt the perfect pet is waiting for you at a local shelter.
Located in Central Tacoma, the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is the hub for lost, abandoned and hopeful pets looking for a forever home in Pierce County. The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County was founded in 1888 after the people of Tacoma were disgusted with how a logger was mistreating a bear by kicking it and forcing it to do tricks. The love the community had for the bear created the opportunity for the organization to open its doors in the Tacoma area.
There are always several wonderful animals available at our local Humane Society. No matter if it’s a sweet cat, bouncing rabbit or loving dog, your ideal pet is waiting for you to bring them home. “I think the greatest things about adoption through the Humane Society like ours is that you are really giving an animal a second chance at life,” says Aubrey Clement, Animal Placement Coordinator with the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. “We take in 8,000 animals a year and, through adoption or finding their owner, we are able to put people and pets together. These animals know, they love you for it and it’s just a great bond that you can get when you come to visit one of our special pets here.”
If you are searching for a pet to join your family, visit the Adopt Now section on the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County’s website or stop by to meet your new best friend by going to 2608 Center Street, Tacoma, WA 98409.

Metro Animal Services is a shelter for cats, dogs and other critters like guinea pigs, turtles and ducks. Metro also provides several other community services. Metro’s mantra is “Serve, Protect, Unite.” This ideology drives them to provide not only adoption services for the community, but they also license pets and have officers who collect loose animals, abused animals and address any animal-related concerns within the community. The services provided through Metro Animal Services are available to seven cities in the Puyallup area. These cities include Puyallup, Sumner, Bonney Lake, Algona, Pacific, Edgewood and Milton.
At the shelter, people can come visit with many animals who can’t wait to find their forever homes. Metro is dedicated to placing animals with people who will be able to establish a lasting relationship with the adopted pet. “These are wonderful pets who would make someone’s life so happy. We love to see those forever homes formed and being part of that,” says Carmen Palmer, Communications Director for The City of Sumner and representative for Metro Animal Services. The staff and volunteers at Metro will work to find the perfect fit for your family, curating the experience to insure the best family match. Metro Animal Services provides profiles for each adoptable animal on their website. You can also stop in any time during normal business hours to visit and meet adoptable animals.
