Consumers can be the first line of defense in protecting their identities. According to the Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, identity theft was the No. 1 complaint category in 2014 with 13 percent of overall complaints. In Washington, there were 10,930 reported victims.
To help protect consumers, Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington is hosting Secure Your ID Day. This event features free on-site shredding, cell phone recycling and electronic recycling. Safe Streets will also be on-site providing free children’s ID cards.
Shred-it mobile shredding trucks will be on-site accepting up to three bags or boxes of unwanted documents per person. For electronic recycling, EWC Group Inc will accept computers, monitors, TVs, printers, DVD players, laptops, stereos, receivers and more. Recycled cell phones will be donated to Verizon’s HopeLine program.
