With over half the 2017 regular season on the books, the Triple-A All-Star break is nearly upon us. Those of us in the South Sound are especially excited because Tacoma has been selected to host the 2017 CHI Franciscan Health Triple-A All-Star Game for the first time in franchise history. From Monday, July 10 to Wednesday, July 12, Cheney Stadium will be filled with some of the best Major League prospects in the country.

All-Star week begins at 7:05 p.m. on Monday with the 2017 Triple-A Home Run Derby presented by Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, where the biggest sluggers in the league show off their prowess for going yard. On Tuesday between 2:30 and 5:00 p.m., Rainiers fans can head to the stadium for Media Day, where everyone gets a chance to see the teams hit BP and score autographs from all the players. The week concludes with the main event, the 2017 CHI Franciscan Health Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday starting at 6:05 p.m.

“Major marquee events like this don’t come around all the time, so being blessed with the opportunity to showcase our region and city to the nation is invaluable,” Rainiers Media and Communications Manager Brett Gleason said. “This event brings some of the top prospects in all of baseball to Tacoma, so fans are sure to see a few future Major League All-Stars. That is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we’re excited to give our fan base and city.”

The Tacoma Rainiers organization attributes much of the honor of being selected to host the 2017 All-Star Game to unwavering fan support. Since 2007, season ticket holders have increased by nearly 500 percent, while attendance has increased consistently in the last seven of nine seasons.

Most recently, the Rainiers welcomed 377,164 fans into Cheney Stadium during the 2016 season, making it the second largest single-season attendance mark in franchise history while averaging a crowd over 80 percent capacity.

“The growth we’ve had over the past nine seasons is because the fans – and the market in general – have so graciously returned to Cheney Stadium to support this franchise,” Team President Aaron Artman said in a press release. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this growth and support than to bring the Triple-A All-Star Game to Tacoma for the first time. It will be a huge showcase for not just Cheney Stadium and the Rainiers, but for the entire region, and we’re excited to show it off.”

Can’t make it to any of the events All-Star week has to offer at Cheney Stadium? No problem. The All-Star Game will be televised nationally on MLB Network. All-Star branded merchandise is already available for purchase both at the Team Store and the club’s official website.
