OlyOrtho Neurosurgeons Tackle Brain, Spine and Nerve Issues

Iuliano explains that he works in general neurosurgery. This addresses a wide variety of physical issues like brain hemorrhages from stroke or trauma, cancerous and benign brain tumors, pituitary tumors, hydrocephalus and Chiari malformations. He has worked on spinal procedures, including surgery on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine for conditions such as disc herniations and spinal stenosis, cancerous and benign spinal tumors, and spinal injuries or spinal fractures. Peripheral nerve procedures include carpal tunnel surgery and surgery for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow.

But just as no two patients are the same, no two solutions are either. Some will require surgical intervention, while others simply may not. Iuliano stresses that just because you’ve been referred to a neurosurgeon, you may not need surgery right away or even at all. He works with your specific case and tailors his approach to the best long-term outcomes for you.

Dr. Brian Iuliano: Top Tier Education and Front-Line Training

Though originally from Rhode Island, Iuliano’s family relocated to Washington State when he was in elementary school. He then returned to the East Coast for college and the Midwest for medical school at Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic. While at Mayo, he did a neurosurgery residency, which included a general surgery internship near Philadelphia and a neurosurgical clinical research fellowship with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

His first practice was in Baltimore, but after six years, Iuliano moved to Olympia to join the team at the Providence Southwest Washington Neurosurgery group at St. Peter Hospital. Now, after 15 years, that division is closing, so he transferred to OlyOrtho to continue serving the Olympia community.

“The decision to join OlyOrtho when the Providence Neurosurgery practice decided to close was easy,” says Iuliano, “because I have developed a good working relationship with their current neurosurgeons over the last eight years. In addition, I have come to know several of the other providers at OlyOrtho over the years, and I hold them and their practice in high regard.”

High-Quality Care from a World-Class Care Team at OlyOrtho

Iuliano hopes that bringing his two decades of experience means OlyOrtho patients receive the same level of care that would normally require traveling to a large referral center or big city hospital. “Rarely there are some complex neurosurgical problems that cannot cared for in Olympia,” he explains, “but I am honest with my patients when these situations arise, and I make appropriate referrals to larger centers in Seattle when needed.”

With a care philosophy that always puts patients first, Iuliano explains that one of the most important elements is that patients need to understand their neurosurgical diagnoses. “I try to explain things and answer questions so the patients have a good understanding of their problems and potential treatment options,” he adds. “I don’t like to make decisions for patients, I want them to understand and partner in their treatment plan.”

Not all diagnoses require invasive surgery. Iuliano believes in only operating when there is a solid chance of helping. “Doing surgery is the easy part,” he says, “the hard part is knowing when surgery would be beneficial and should be considered.”

In the rare moments when he’s not working, Iuliano stays equally busy with his wife and four children. He also enjoys tennis, hiking, traveling, reading and watching sports or a good movie.
