Eloquent Objects: Lecture and Book Signing @ Tacoma Art Museum | Tacoma | Washington | United States

Join exhibition curator Charles Eldredge, Hall Distinguished Professor of American Art at the University of Kansas and former Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, at TAM to learn more about the work of New Mexico’s early still-life painters. He will be available to sign his exhibition catalogue as well.

This year marks 100 years since the Taos Society of Artists was founded, providing an opportune moment to reconsider that pioneering Southwestern art association, along with other creative centers that flourished in New Mexico in the early 20th century. The colorful landscape and its indigenous populations captured artists’ and the public’s imagination. Still-life painters also found inspiration in the cultural artifacts of the region—Pueblo pottery, tribal objects, Hispanic devotional figures—items that, with equal eloquence, evoked the “land of enchantment.”
